John finally got the courage to ask Mary out on a date. (okay, we've changed the names to protect the privacy of the people). He was surprised when she said "Yes" and seemed enthusiastic about it.

Mary couldn't respond to that, and waited for him to elaborate, but he was so caught up in his insecurity that he just stared at her, making her more uncomfortable.

In a desperate attempt to win her over, he began talking about himself, his job, his recent promotion, and so on.

They managed to struggle through the dinner, and John asked her if she wanted to go to a club and dance. She said: "I'm kind of tired; I think I should go home."

So John took her home and asked if he could call her sometime. She winced and said, "I don't think so. I mean, you’re a nice guy, but, I don't think this is working out."

John was naturally crushed and lost more confidence. He wondered "What is wrong with me?"

Ironically, Mary later told her friend that she thought John was very physically attractive, but, "…he couldn't hold a conversation in a paper bag."

Although John had gotten plenty of dating advice from friends, and read dating tips on the Internet, it didn't matter.

The sad fact is simple enough, John's own mind got in his way!

It doesn't matter who you are, who you are dating, if your mind is not on track, your dating game will be off all the time. And you're up against difficult odds. All your insecurities come up when you want to impress someone, and you try to compensate for your perceived shortcomings. Things just go from bad to worse.

 

Now try this story. See if you can spot the difference:

Tom loved to square dance, he thought it was hysterical and a lot of fun. He was not very good at it, but he didn't mind. He always had fun anyway.

One day Tom went with some male friends to a square dance. Jim, his friend was terribly shy and nervous.

As soon as they arrived at the hall, Tom sized up the room and saw a lot of women sitting on the other side of the hall, just waiting to be asked to dance. Tom wanted to dance, so he just walked over to the line of women and started asking them if they wanted to dance.

The first woman said "No", and turned away, the second woman said she was tired, the third said "Sure!" and off they went to dance. Neither of them knew how to square dance, but that didn't matter much to them, they just went along with the caller and did the best they could, laughing and enjoying themselves. After their adventure on the dance floor, they went to the punch bowl for refreshments and got into a conversation and had a great time.

The woman excused herself and Tom went to see how his friend Jim was doing. Jim was miserable. He complained that no one would dance with him. Tom asked him: "Did you ask anyone?" Jim admitted that he hadn't. No matter how much Tom encouraged him, Jim could not get the courage to ask anyone to dance with him. All he could do was come up with reasons why no one would want to dance with him. Ironically, Jim was an athlete and had one of those sculpted bodies that commercials claim make people desirable.

Tom shrugged and looked for his female friend to dance again, but she was not around. So he just went to the next woman he found and asked her. She was surprised, but said yes. Again, the two had a great, fun time dancing. They also had a wonderful conversation at the punch bowl.

This went on all evening and at then end, Tom had several phone numbers, while Jim had nothing.

Why did Tom succeed so well, while Jim failed? Again it was in their minds.

Tom had once gotten dating advice that told him to focus on the adventure of the experience. He'd read dating tips that told him to focus on others. In this story, he was focused on the dance and having fun with the many women he met. He was not concerned about how well he danced, if he was attractive, and so on. He just wanted to have a good time dancing and knew that he'd probably find some nice women in the process. So he, and the women he danced with did!

Jim was trapped by his own mind and got nothing because all he could think about was that he didn't know how to square dance, would look stupid and no one would like him. He had gotten dating advice that said he had to work on his body to be attractive. He thought this was all he needed to do. None of the dating tips he'd read helped him realize that there is more to love and romance than looking good. He thought all he needed was that "perfect body". He never thought about his mind. His physically fit body was of no use to him at all. He looked good, but beauty is as beauty does, and in this case, beauty did nothing at all.

He was right, of course; he met no one, learned nothing of dancing and was miserable, more convinced than ever that in spite of his body, he was undesirable. His mind ruined his evening.

We do what we think, we follow our thoughts. When we change our thoughts, we change our lives.
