Introduction

The five small tutorials in Bryce Lighting FX1 explore Bryce 5 lighting effects to give your scenes visual drama. Understanding the use of lighting makes the difference between an image that is "flat" and one that is "alive with interest"! The power of Bryce 5 lighting is impressive, but some of the concepts can be a bit puzzling. The Bryce 5 manual is filled with detailed and important information about how this amazingly powerful and flexible program works with light. Being a manual, it is a starting off point. It doesn't have experiments or little tricks and tips.

These tutorials use simple Bryce 5 scenes and experiments to expand on the knowledge the manual provides. As you work with the experiments and explanations, that great "AHA" can come to you, and then your understanding and use of Bryce 5 will improve dramatically!

Although these tutorials are for Bryce 5, they may work for Bryce 4, and the principles are universal to the way Bryce illuminates scenes. The tutorials are aimed at helping you understand the principles of Bryce 5 lighting and experiment with it, rather than making a specific scene. When you have a good grasp of the principles, you can use your imagination and creativity to put them to use for almost any scene you can dream.

Bryce Lighting FX1 is linear and progressive. It contains five tutorials, each new one building on the last. The complexity is kept as simple as possible, but the possibilities multiply as you progress. The tutorials come in two versions: browser friendly pages (which contain images) and printer friendly pages (all text, no images). I suggest that you read the browser friendly pages (to see the images that illustrate the concepts), then the print the printer friendly pages. With a printed copy of the tutorial(s) you can open Bryce 5 and work with the program much like following a guide or walkthrough for a computer game. And it's much easier than switching between applications!

Start with the Bryce Sun. This very important "ambient light" source can prove extremely valuable in dramatically lighting scenes. Everything in Bryce Lighting FX1 follows from this tutorial, and the model you start there will be used and expanded throughout.

Enjoy!
