Meta Tags:
One of the easiest forms of
seo optimization is to write good META TAGS. Search engines look for them
and use them to title and describe your site in their results.
A meta tag tells the search
engines about your Web page, (the title of the page, the page description
and the keywords, key phrases, the author, etc.). Search engines use TWO
of them to display results, and some use more of them, as well as the content
of the web page, to determine your page ranking, along with many other factors.
Good
meta tag use can move you up in search engine lists, closer to the number
one spot! Taking the time to write good meta tags is a very helpful seo tool
for effective search engine optimization. This page will give you some SEO
optimization tips and explain how COUNT MY TEXT! can help
you improve your rankings by optimizing your use of the important -- meta
tag.

How
to use COUNT MY TEXT! as a Meta Tag SEO Tool:
The three most important meta
tags to include in any Web page are:
There are other meta tags,
of course, but these are the top three that search engines like to see.
Meta tags are listed between
the <head> and </head> tags, located at the start of your HTML
code.
Search engines have meta tag
and keyword character limits. If your meta tag or keyword tag exceeds this
limit, it will be truncated and the extra characters will be ignored. Although
it is reported that Google doesn't consider the keyword meta tag, other search
engines do rely on it. Don't be fooled by Google's popularity, there are many search
engines that will index your site -- the more the better -- so you want to
have good search engine optimization for ALL of them. The big question is
-- what are the character limits for different meta tags?
You can use COUNT MY
TEXT! to find the limits allowed by different search engines for
the two important meta tags (title and description) that you can see. This
page will tell you how. The keywords meta tag is a bit different, and is
explained at the bottom of this page.
This
page is not a primer on meta tag or SEO optimization strategy. It shows how COUNT
MY TEXT! can be used as an seo tool to help you optimize meta tag
text so it follows the character count and display search engine rules. You
must follow these rules for good SEO (search engine optimization). It's easy
and worth the small amount of effort it takes.
TITLE
META TAG CHARACTER COUNTING with
COUNT MY TEXT!
Title Meta Tag Format Example:
<title>SEO
Tool - COUNT MY TEXT! Word and Character Counter</title>
The title is actually an HTML
tag, not a true meta tag-- but it is extremely important, works like a meta
tag, and is often called one anyway. The Title Tag:
-
tells a browser what to display
at the top of the Web page,
-
tells the search engine your
page title to display as a search result,
-
tells the search engine keywords
or key phrases that apply to the page, if they are included in the
title meta tag.
This is especially important in SEO (search engine
optimization) because it can help improve page ranking.
The question is: What are the
character limits for a Title tag (i.e. page title)? There are many estimates
you can find on the Internet that may or may not be right (we have seen three
different limits - 40 characters, 60 characters and 90 characters explained
on SEO and Webmaster forums!) With so much differing information, how do
you know the limits, especially when you are trying to pack your page title
with important keywords?
The answer is simple: Count
the characters that a search engine already displays for sites it lists!
You can use COUNT MY TEXT! on any search engine result to
count the characters in the displayed title. This will tell you the limit
on the number of characters allowed. Here is how to do it:
-
Highlight any page title you
find in a search engine and copy it.
-
Paste it into COUNT
MY TEXT! and click the COUNT TEXT button.
- Look at the "characters
and spaces" result. This will tell how many characters are displayed
by the search engine, and thus the limit for your page title.
NOTE: If
a title meta tag is longer than the search engine limit, it will be truncated
and followed by an ellipses (...) This can be avoided by limiting the number
of characters in your title to what the search engine is set to display,
as revealed by using COUNT MY TEXT!
Different search engines have
different criteria and they sometimes change their rules, so it helps to
use COUNT MY TEXT! on each one to check what is currently
being displayed at the time you are creating your title meta tag. Points
to keep in mind:
-
Character limits include
spaces because these are real characters to a computer, even though
to humans, they appear to be invisible.
-
Some search engines may ignore
keywords or keyphrases that are beyond the search engine's allowed title
character limit. This is why determining a "safe" character count
is so important for title meta tag seo optimization.
COUNT
MY TEXT! can help you write a title meta tag that fits within the
allowed character limits for search engines by showing you the exact character
count of the title meta tag you have composed. This includes spaces, which
some search engines consider important. And it can optimize -- remove
redundant spaces -- automatically, that you may accidentally place
in your title tag. This is extremely important because if you have an extra
space between words in a keyphrase, a search engine might not recognize
it properly.
And
don't forget about your human readers. If they see extra spaces in a Page
Title (the title tag IS the page title) they may not take you seriously because
this appears to be sloppy and careless.
Many word processors
will not warn you about extra spaces (two or more spaces in a row), but Count
My Text! will warn you and remove them for you automatically.
Note:
COUNT MY TEXT! is not a word processor. It does not contain a spell
or grammar checker. It is a character and word counter and optimizer. It
provides character information and helps remove mistakes that a word processor
may miss. As such it can be a valuable tool for document management and other
text formatting needs.
TITLE
META TAG OPTIMIZING With COUNT MY TEXT!
Many seo optimization strategies
recommend including keywords or keyphrases in the title meta tag.
COUNT MY TEXT 's
OPTMIZE feature can help you ensure they are correct because it will strip
out extra, and unnecessary spaces. Remember, spaces are critical because computers
count spaces. An
example will show this clearly:
Let's say you are including
the key phrase: running shoes in your title tag. You have it in
your keyword list and it occurs several times on your web page. Your title
tag might look like this:
<title>Run
Around - the Web site all about running shoes!</title>
TIP:
Use only words and dashes in page titles to avoid problems caused by special
characters.
A search engine you want this
to list has a character limit of 50. This title meta tag has 50 characters,
so it will appear completely. All is ready to go, right?
Look carefully!
To
some search engines, the key phrase running shoes isn't there!
There are TWO
spaces between running and shoes. The key phrase in the
keywords meta tag and in the body of the web page text may be running
shoes - with one space between the words. So a search engine may not
consider the use of the phrase:
"running shoes"
in this title tag to be a keyword or keyphrase match for anything! This could
hurt your page ranking and affect the search engine optimization!
Now look at this title:
<title>Run
Around - the Web site all about running shoes!</title>
This title was run through
COUNT MY TEXT!, which found the space error and optimized it.
Now, this title meta tag has
49 characters, so it will appear completely in the search engine listing,
AND the key phrase running shoes is properly formatted so a search
engine will see it and consider it a "match" with other uses of
the key phrase in the body of the web page text and in the keywords meta
tag.
When writing a meta
tag, it is easy to accidentally insert an extra space between words and not
notice it. This is especially true if you edit some text and wind
up with an extra space unintentionally in the editing process. Your eyes
may not see the space, so you think everything is fine. A word processor
may not report it.
COUNT MY TEXT! has
an OPTIMIZE feature that strips out extra spaces for you!
Just
type or paste your title meta tag text into COUNT MY TEXT! and click the
OPTIMIZE button.
COUNT
MY TEXT! will strip out extra spaces between words for you and give you a
character count. You can then copy the text from COUNT MY TEXT! and paste
it into your HTML code for the title meta tag. This makes it an excellent
SEO tool.
Note:
COUNT MY TEXT! is not a word processor. It does not contain a spell
or grammar checker. It is a character and word counter and optimizer. It
provides character information and helps remove mistakes that a word processor
may miss. As such it can be a valuable tool for document management and other
text formatting needs.

DESCRIPTION
META TAG CHARACTER COUNTING with
COUNT MY TEXT!
Description Meta Tag Format
Example:
<meta name="description" content="This
is an easy to use software utility program that allows you to input text
and get accurate word and text count. It optimizes text automatically.">
The description meta tag is
also very important because the content displays in some search engine results,
but never in a browser. This meta tag:
-
tells the search engine what
to display as a description of your web page,
-
if it is missing or goes over
the character limits a search engine may "grab" the first or last
part of the "body" of your page text and display that instead,
-
tells the search engine some
keywords or key phrases that apply to the page, if they are included in the
description tag.
This is especially important in SEO (search engine
optimization) because it can help improve page ranking.
The question is: What are the
character limits for a description tag? There are many estimates you can
find on the Internet that may or may not be right (we have seen different
limits - 150 characters, 200 characters, explained on SEO and Webmaster forums
and in SEO tool kits!) With so much differing information, how do you know
the limits, especially when you are trying to pack your description meta
tag with important keywords and ensure that a search engine will display
it?
The answer is simple: Count
the characters that a search engine already displays for sites it lists!
You can use COUNT MY TEXT! on any search engine result to
count the characters in the page description (which usually comes from the
description tag). This will tell you the limit on the number of characters
allowed. Here is how to do it:
-
Highlight any page description
you find in a search engine and copy it.
-
Paste it into COUNT
MY TEXT! and click the COUNT TEXT button.
- Look at the "characters
and spaces" result. This will tell how many characters are displayed
by the search engine, and thus the limit for your page title.
NOTE: If
a description meta tag is longer than the search engine limit, it will be
truncated and followed by an ellipses (...) This can be avoided by limiting
the number of characters in your description meta tag to what the search

-
Character limits include
spaces because these are real characters to a computer, even though
to humans, they appear to be invisible.
-
Some search engines may ignore
keywords or keyphrases that are beyond the search engine's allowed description
tag character limit. Some may even ignore the description meta tag altogether
if it exceeds limits. This is why determining a "safe" character
count is so important for description meta tag seo optimization.
COUNT
MY TEXT! can help you write a description meta tag that fits within
the allowed character limits for search engines by showing you the exact
character count of the description meta tag you have composed. This includes
spaces, which some search engines consider important. And it can optimize

because if you have an extra space between words in a keyphrase, a search
engine might not recognize it properly.
And
don't forget about your human readers. If they see extra spaces in a description
listed by a search engine, they may decide not to visit because it looks
sloppy and careless. Your description meta tag is like an advertisement,
you want it to captivate your audience and bring you visitors. Look around
the listings in search engines under any topic. How many descriptions capture
YOUR interest? Learn from the mistakes of others and you will be more successful.
Many word processors
will not warn you about extra spaces (two or more spaces in a row), but Count
My Text! will warn you and remove them for you automatically.

DESCRIPTION
META TAG OPTIMIZING With COUNT MY TEXT!
Many seo optimization strategies
recommend including keywords or phrases in the description meta tag.
COUNT MY TEXT 's OPTMIZE feature
can help you ensure they are correct because it will strip out extra, and
unnecessary spaces. Spacing is critical because computers count spaces.
As explained in the Title
Meta Tag section of this page, spaces are important to some search engines
and can change the meaning of key phrases. So it is equally important to
make sure the description meta tag is free of extra spaces between words.
And there is another problem to consider that is unique to the description
meta tag.
Description meta tags are made
up of sentences. Some people type TWO spaces after a period. (This used to
be taught in school when people used typewriters.) It is not necessary on
a computer which uses proportional fonts) and wastes valuable characters.
Three unnecessary spaces are
the character count equivalent of the word "the", "get" and
any other useful three character words! So it is wise to use as few spaces
as possible in the description meta tag to maximize word use.
COUNT MY TEXT! has
an OPTIMIZE feature that strips out extra spaces between words and after
the periods!
Just
type or paste your description meta tag text into COUNT MY TEXT! and click
the OPTIMIZE button.
COUNT
MY TEXT! will strip out extra spaces between words as well as extra spaces
after the periods for you and give you a new character count. You can then
copy the text from COUNT MY TEXT! and paste it into your HTML code for the
description meta tag.
Note:
COUNT MY TEXT! is not a word processor. It does not contain a spell
or grammar checker. It is a character and word counter and optimizer. It
provides character information and helps remove mistakes that a word processor
may miss. As such it can be a valuable tool for document management and other

KEYWORDS
META TAG CHARACTER COUNTING with
COUNT MY TEXT!
Keywords Meta Tag Format Example:
<meta name="keywords" content="seo,seo
tool,seo optimization,meta tag,search engine optimization,keyword">
The keywords tag is hotly contested
by some SEO experts. Some claim it is no longer used by search engines because
according to some research, Google no longer relies on it. A few experts
claim that Google will punish a site for having a keywords meta tag. but
they do not provide concrete evidence of this claim. In fact, some of these
experts' own web sites include the keywords meta tag!
Not all search engines follow
Google's rules, some are quite independent, and they follow older rules and
rely on the keywords tag. Certainly, it is easy enough to write a good keywords
meta tag and since it CAN help some search engine optimization, there is
no reason not to include it.
For good seo optimization,
the most important words in the keyword meta tag should be also included
in the title meta tag and the description meta tag where possible. All the
content of the keywords tag should appear several times throughout the body
of the page text. This is called "keyword density".
The keywords meta tag content
never displays in a browser. It is used only by search engines (those search
engines that do use it) and it has a few special characteristics that make
it different (and very important to format correctly) from the other meta
tags. When a search engine relies on the keywords meta tag:
-
it tells the search engine
what search terms you are "targeting" in your page and where to
list your page - under which search terms,
-
it isn't restricted to single
words, it can include phrases (groups of words),
-
if
it is missing, a search engine may look for keywords it "knows" in
the body of your web page and stick the page under those topics, possibly
in a very poor position.
The character limit for the
keywords tag is usually 255. However, most experts suggest that you use fewer
characters. In general 4 to 6 keywords or key phrases is considered optimal.
A few,
highly targeted keywords and key phrases in the keywords meta tag are much
easier to incorporate in the body of the web page without looking like "keyword
loading", sometimes called "spamming". And remember that humans
are going to read your Web page, and THEY are most important. If they read
a page that appears loaded with keywords and makes no sense, they will have
a low opinion of your page and you.
The format for the keywords
meta tag is important.
-
Keywords and key phrases are
separated by the comma (,) There is no need for a space after the comma (which
is a separator to the search engine). Remember, the comma is a character,
so it is a valid part of the character count. This is unique to the keywords
tag format. DO NOT place a comma after the last keyword
or keyphrase in the keywords tag. This can cause a keyword relevancy error!
-
When you use a key phrase,
format it as you normally would, i.e. running shoes (one space between
the words).
-
Key phrases help in "organic
searches" where people search for an actual phrase by typing it within
quotes in the search box (i.e. "running shoes").
-
The last keyword or key phrase
in the keyword tag is followed by a close quote, not a comma or period.
NOTE:
COUNT MY TEXT! can help you write a keywords meta tag that fits within the
allowed character limits for search engines by showing you the exact character
count of the meta tag you have composed. This includes spaces and commas,
which search engines consider important.
Note:
COUNT MY TEXT! is not a word processor. It does not contain a spell
or grammar checker. It is a character and word counter and optimizer. It
provides character information and helps remove mistakes that a word processor
may miss. As such it can be a valuable tool for document management and other
text formatting needs.
KEYWORDS
META TAG OPTIMIZING With COUNT MY TEXT!
The keywords tag is easy to
misformat and fill with extra spaces. This changes the meaning of the key
phrases for some search engines. It is possible to enter a key phrase "running shoes" when
you really wanted "running shoes". The extra space between
the words running and shoes can change the meaning to a search engine.
COUNT MY TEXT! 's
OPTMIZE feature can help you.
As described in the Title Tag
section of this page, spaces are important to a computer and can change the
meaning of key phrases.
COUNT MY TEXT! has
an OPTIMIZE feature that strips out extra spaces between words!
Just
type or paste your keywords meta tag text into COUNT MY TEXT! and click the
OPTIMIZE button.
COUNT
MY TEXT! will strip out extra spaces between words and give you a new character
count. It will leave a space after a comma, if you did so in the original
text, and it will NOT FORCE a space after a comma if you left one out, so
your format will be preserved.
You
can then copy the text from COUNT MY TEXT! and paste it into your HTML code
for the keywords meta tag.
Note:
COUNT MY TEXT! is not a word processor. It does not contain a spell
or grammar checker. It is a character and word counter and optimizer. It
provides character information and helps remove mistakes that a word processor
may miss. As such it can be a valuable tool for document management and other
